It is not entirely uncommon to see some directories referred to as “premium” directories. What exactly is a premium directory you ask? Most of us are familiar with a premium as either a bonus or prize payment or as an additional fee for a service or product. Does that mean a premium directory requires a premium fee of some kind? Not exactly - premium is also a descriptive term for “high value”, and in this case directory owners are indicating that their directory has exceptionally high or unusal value.
There is no clear definition of a premium directory. In other words this term is as much the directory owner’s opinion as anything. However, the term is somewhat common and there are some common variables to look for before classifying a premium directory:
- Name recognition
- Traffic volume
- Age of the directory
- SERP positioning for key terms
- PageRank, Alexa, etc.
